Chapter Twenty-Six

‘He who has water and peat on his own farm has the world his own way.’

—Irish proverb

The lights came on and Seán wasted no time scrambling up the steps to the foyer. He decided that was enough of an inspection for the time being. He exited the front door, and with shaking hands, locked it. Was he trying to keep whatever that was inside? He got in his vehicle but didn’t drive off immediately. Taking time to think, he began rationalizing what had occurred. What had occurred? A faulty wiring connection? An active imagination? What was to be his next move?

As if in answer to his own question, an image of a young woman came into his mind; a lovely young woman, as he recalled. Had it been eight months since he’d last spoken to Nuala? Why hadn’t he pursued a relationship, when he’d gotten a feeling that she might be interested in him as well? He’d called her a few times after Christmas, and they’d chatted a bit, but she had gone off to culinary school, and he was busy trying to educate himself for his future. He hoped it wasn’t too late. And now, this was a perfect opener to be in touch. He would ask her if she and her sisters might help him look into the possibility that his new home was haunted.

The idea of entering the house with reinforcements sounded like a much better plan than trying to figure out what was happening on his own. He could feel his breathing slow and his heartbeat returning to its normal rhythm after the adrenaline rush of trying to get out of the house faster than his legs could carry him.

Nuala looked down at her mobile as it trilled an incoming call. Seán Kennedy. Hmm. It’d been a while; what could he want?

“Hello?”

“Nuala! Great to hear your voice! How ya getting on? This is Seán …”

“I’m grand, yourself?”

“That’s the thing … ah, sorry it’s been so long since I called. I meant to … I should’ve …”

“It’s fine, I could’ve called you as well—this isn’t Victorian England, after all. I’m really glad you called.”

“You are? That’s grand. And your sisters? Are they alright? Are they still in the investigating business?”

“I’m actually a partner in the business now as well. We all have our different skills to contribute—”

“Ah, sound. Cheers for that. And school? Are you finished with the cooking classes?”

“Oh, that was only for four months. I graduated last spring,” she said, hinting at the amount of time that had passed since they had last spoken. “I’ve been chef here at the inn ever since.”

“And Moira and Deirdre? They’re pretty busy with their investigations business?”

What was he going on about? “Seán, did you call for a specific reason? As much as I enjoy talking with you, it doesn’t sound like you just called to chat.” Nuala would rather he got to the point, if there was a point.

“Right. You’re right. Here goes. I need your and your sisters’ help.
